Frequently Asked Questions

Anyone who is committed and dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of children and young people under the care of The Department of Child Safety can apply to become a foster parent.  Parents can be individuals, couples, families and from any background, religion or culture.  There is no set criteria for becoming a carer.

To become an approved foster/kinship carer, applicants have to undergo the approval process which involves health screening, child protection screening, traffic and criminal history checks, personal referee checks, training and approximately ten hours of face-to-face interviewing and meetings.

Yes, there is training involved.  Before the initial assessment can begin, carers are required to complete pre-service training modules 1 to 4.  Once approved, you will then be required to complete modules 5 to 7 within one year of approval.  During your time as a foster parent, you will be provided with and have access to continual training and development.

Once you are an approved carer, FSG Australia will appoint a co-ordinator who will be your support person and point of contact.  In addition, you will be provided with the opportunity to increase your skills and knowledge with ongoing training.

How long will the process take to become an approved foster parent?
The process of becoming an approved foster parent from the date of initial contact to the date a child is placed in your care will take between three and six months.
